About Ensemble Constantinople
Inspired by the ancient city illuminating the East and West, Constantinople stands at the crossroads of artistic encounters; drawing from the heritage of the Middle-Ages and the Renaissance, from Europe to the Mediterranean and to the Middle-East. Founded in 2001 in Montreal by artistic director Kiya Tabassian, Constantinople honors and shares the rich musical traditions of the world by creating new music in the form of unique encounters, connections and bridges between cultures, periods, styles and people, and by disseminating it around the globe. Constantinople has 20 albums to its credit and traveled to more than 290 cities in 57 countries presenting over 60 works.
Setar virtuoso and acclaimed composer, Kiya Tabassian has carved out a privileged place on the international music scene with his ensemble Constantinople and also as a soloist.master in cross-cultural musical encounters, he travels across the continents, presenting his musical creations and collaborations on stages all over the world. With a background in Persian scholarly music he never ceases to explore different musical trails: from medieval manuscripts to contemporary aesthetics, from Mediterranean Europe to the East or passing through the open spaces of the Baroque New World. Tabassian cofounded Constantinople in 2021 developing more than fifty programs with his ensemble.

About Traversées
Everywhere, from time immemorial, the Word has been embodied by the bard, the troubadour, the griot. These wordsmiths, at once messengers and peacemakers, are the links with the forces of nature, the inexpressible divine, the memory of the ancients. It falls to them to maintain the realm of the collective soul.
Nowadays, these freethinkers and travelers are making the world their garden… Like Constantinople’s musicians and Ablaye Cissoko, griot from Saint-Louis, Senegal, all eternally migrating birds. This meeting between Ablaye and Constantinople, between strings and vocals, goes back in time to evoke the beauty of being. It is a joint passage through the common sites of the imagination, like a long breath before the inexorable march of the world and time.
From the start, this dialogue between the kora and the setar seemed to come from the depths of the earth, as though these instruments, along with the double bass and percussion, had always existed side by side. This natural symbiosis gave us wings to fly towards distant horizons, and our music has been heard over one hundred times in various festivals and halls around the world.
This exceptional harmony that exists today between our music and our selves has allowed us to create works inspired by our inner gardens and shared voyages, which we present to you with this concert.
