2024 Classical Workshop

200 Years Ago: The Great Works of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and their Contemporaries
Pacific Boychoir Academy, Oakland
July 28–August 3, 2024
Kati Kyme and William Skeen, co-directors

  • The presidential election of 1824 was also a crazy one! With no presidential candidate garnering an electoral college majority, the vote was sent to the House of Representatives (for only the second time, but it hasn’t happened since). John Quincy Adams emerged as the winner—only to be defeated by the runner up, Andrew Jackson, four years later.

But forget all of that and come join us at the Classical Workshop, where we’ll immerse ourselves in the great music of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and their contemporaries.

  • On four of the five full instruction days, participants will be assigned to a quartet or other ensemble with whom they will play in coached and uncoached sessions. Each evening, the groups will perform the day’s piece in front of the whole workshop.

Wednesday will feature an all-day all-workshop orchestra.

  • Our faculty features members of The New Esterházy Quartet, one of the country’s leading period-instrument string quartets.

    William Skeen director and cello
    Anthony Martin viola
    Kristin Zoernig bass

  • All string players interested in learning more about Classical-era repertoire and historically informed performance are welcome!

Some proficiency with sight-reading is recommended. To the best of our ability, we will tailor your experience to your skill level and ability so that you will feel both comfortable and challenged.

  • We’ll be hosting the Classical Workshop again on the grounds of the Pacific Boychoir Academy (215 Ridgeway) in picturesque North Oakland!
