Vallejo Choral Society – The Magnificent Enigma: J. S. Bach’s Mass in B minor
Free and open to the public, this unique presentation by Derek Tam marks the start of VCS’s 103rd season. Join VCS Artistic Director Derek Tam for an exploration into Bach’s motivations for compiling a Roman Catholic mass, himself a devout Lutheran, as well as the work’s decades-long gestation. An early music specialist, Derek will also discuss how interpretations of the Mass in B minor—and Bach’s music in general—have evolved, and how we are still discovering more about this enigmatic masterpiece.

“The King of Instruments in the Age of Bach ~ part 2”. Unlike the suites for unaccompanied cello or the sonatas and partitas for solo violin, BACH’s works for solo lute do not seem to have been conceived as a group. The suites for unaccompanied cello and the sonatas and partitas for violin have been arranged for lute by a number of 20th Century lutenists. In many ways they lend themselves to the lute better than the lute works. Critically acclaimed virtuoso of plucked instruments since age nine, John Schneiderman specializes in the performance practice and repertoire of eighteenth-century lutes and nineteenth- century guitars. Based in California, Mr. Schneiderman is in demand as a soloist and chamber musician collaborating on recordings and performances throughout North America.
