About SFEMS
Who are we?
Since 1975 the San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS) has presented
high quality concerts, up-to-date publications, and some of the best education programs
available anywhere. All this has contributed to the Bay Area’s reputation as one of
America’s leading centers for the performance of early music. Find out more

What does SFEMS do?
-
Concerts
SFEMS produces at least
six major chamber concerts annually and maintains a
special commitment to locally-based performers and ensembles.
- Workshops
SFEMS offers one of the most comprehensive summer early music programs in the
United States, led by a faculty of international artists in residence.
The
Medieval and Renaissance,
Baroque,
Recorder, and
Classical
workshops
offer instrumental and vocal master classes, lectures, coached ensembles,
and recitals and provide opportunities for musicians and dancers at a
variety of levels to improve their ensemble skills, performance techniques,
and teaching abilities.
The
Music Discovery Workshop
Music Discovery Workshop is a day camp
for children
ages 7-15.
- Berkeley Festival & Exhibition
Every other year, SFEMS co-produces a week-long festival of early music in the Bay
Area, usually in the first week of June.
"The Berkeley Festival & Exhibition has become a remarkable institution on the
American musical scene." - The New York Times

Area, including concert series and festivals, instrument makers, music societies, performing groups, performers and teachers, publishers, stores and services, and schools and workshops.
- Affiliates
Since 1980 SFEMS has assisted groups that share the Society's commitments to music for educational purposes, artistic excellence, a historically informed approach, and operation on a not-for-profit basis.
- Newsletters
SFEMS publishes a monthly newsletter with articles about local events and groups, and a complete calendar of early music concerts. Past newsletters are
