The Splendor of Hapsburg Europe
The influence of the Hapsburg courts was felt all across Europe.
Musicians traveled from court to court, city to city, spreading and
mixing compositional styles and new musical effects. We will work
with music by Schmelzer, Muffat, Caldara, Bertali, Fux, Bach, Sances,
Ziani, Zelenka, Biber, Carissimi, to name but a few of the composers
employed by the Hapsburgs. We will sample everything from solo works
through compositions for small chamber ensembles to full chorus and
orchestra. Forms include cantatas, motets, and opera arias, works
for oboe band, and concerti for all manner of instruments.
This is your opportunity to revel in the splendor of Baroque music,
focusing on interpretation, expression, gesture, ornamentation, and national
style. Our special project for vocalists with instrumental accompaniment,
From the Danube to the Elbe: Music from the Empires of Austria and Germany,
will give students the opportunity to perform solo and small ensemble arias under
the instruction of Christine Brandes, Mary Springfels, and David Morris.
